Measuring Entanglement Entropy in Valence Bond Quantum Monte Carlo Simulations

چکیده
In this thesis we examine methods for measuring entanglement entropy in spin-1/2 Heisenberg systems using quantum Monte Carlo in the valence bond basis. We begin by presenting the quantum Monte Carlo techniques used in this research. We then use these techniques to directly compare the recently proposed valence bond entanglement entropy to the standard definition of entanglement entropy: the von Neumann entanglement entropy. We find that the valence bond entanglement entropy does not give a bound on the von Neumann entanglement entropy, and that it exhibits a multiplicative logarithmic correction to the area law that is not present in the scaling of the von Neumann entanglement entropy. We then present a method to measure higher orders of the generalized Renyi entanglement entropies using valence bond quantum Monte Carlo, and show results for the second Renyi entropy. We find the results converge to the exact results for one dimensional Heisenberg spin-1/2 chains, and see that the scaling of the second Renyi entropy follows an area law in the two dimensional Heisenberg ground state.

Valence bond and von Neumann entanglement entropy in Heisenberg ladders.
We present a direct comparison of the recently proposed valence bond entanglement entropy and the von Neumann entanglement entropy on spin-1/2 Heisenberg systems using quantum Monte Carlo and density-matrix renormalization group simulations. For one-dimensional chains we show that the valence bond entropy can be either less or greater than the von Neumann entropy; hence, it cannot provide a bou...
متن کاملMonte Carlo Simulations of Quantum Spin Systems in the Valence Bond Basis
We discuss a projector Monte Carlo method for quantum spin models formulated in the valence bond basis, using the S = 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet as an example. Its singlet ground state can be projected out of an arbitrary basis state as the trial state, but a more rapid convergence can be obtained using a good variational state. As an alternative to first carrying out a time consuming varia...

A generalized version of the valence-bond Monte Carlo method is used to study ground state properties of the 1 + 1 dimensional quantum Q-state Potts models. For appropriate values of Q these models can be used to describe interacting chains of non-Abelian anyons — quasiparticle excitations of certain exotic fractional quantum Hall states. متن کاملEntanglement at a two-dimensional quantum critical point: a T = 0 projector quantum Monte Carlo study
Although the leading-order scaling of entanglement entropy is nonuniversal at a quantum critical point (QCP), sub-leading scaling can contain universal behaviour. Such universal quantities are commonly studied in noninteracting field theories, however it typically requires numerical calculation to access them in interacting theories. In this paper, we use large-scale T = 0 quantum Monte Carlo s...

We report on the recent progress in theoretical and numerical studies of entanglement entropy in lattice gauge theories. It is shown that the concept of quantum entanglement between gauge fields in two complementary regions of space can only be introduced if the Hilbert space of physical states is extended in a certain way. In the extended Hilbert space, the entanglement entropy can be partiall...
